Craft Your Own Axe Handle: One To One Woodworking Class

During this one to one woodworking course you will learn how to carve and fit your own axe handle and haft it to an axe head of your choosing. The day is spent in our woodland workshop, set deep within an ancient woodland. By the end of the day you will leave with a fully functional axe fitted with a bespoke handle designed specifically for you. Beginning with a piece of seasoned ash, you will be guided step by step through the process of shaping your handle using an axe and drawknife. Making your own handle allows you to tailor the length, thickness and profile to suit your body, grip and the type of work you intend to use your axe for. The afternoon is then dedicated to fitting the axe head, refining the shape and achieving a smooth and durable finish. After booking we will contact you to discuss your requirements. We offer both carving axe handles and full sized felling axe handles, with the final length and profile shaped to suit the weight of the axe head and your intended use. You are very welcome to bring along an old axe head that needs a new handle. If you do not have one, we can supply a suitable head. Please get in touch if you have any questions before booking. The course runs entirely outdoors under a large woodland shelter, so please dress appropriately for the weather. No previous woodworking experience is required.

Over the duration of the course we will cover: - Introduction to axes and the varying types of head and handle. - Selecting ash wood for handle making. - Tool safety. - Roughing out the handle with a carving axe and draw knife. - Shaping the handle with hand tools. - Fitting the axe head. - Finishing the handle. You will be provided: - A prepared piece of ash for your handle. - All tools and equipment. - An axe head. Hot drinks provided, please bring a packed lunch.
