Metal Lathe Induction & Familiarisation

X

Description

Metal lathe induction & familiarisation is a structured, supervised session designed both for existing Makerspace members requiring formal machine induction and for community participants who want a safe, practical introduction to using a metal lathe. Delivered in a small group, the session covers lathe controls, workholding, cutting tools, and safe working practices in a supervised workshop environment. The focus is on familiarisation and safe use rather than production work, with time for questions and hands-on practice under direct supervision. For existing members, this session may form part of the formal induction process required before independent machine use. For community participants, the session includes induction into the Makerspace and temporary membership for the duration of the course period, allowing supervised access to the metal lathe. Participants may choose to continue their membership beyond this period if they wish. Completion of this session does not automatically grant unsupervised access to the lathe. Following the session, participants will be required to complete a period of supervised shadowing, for up to 14 visits, or until the inductor deems them competent to work independently, whichever comes first. Independent access is subject to assessment and internal approval. During the shadowing period, when supervised, participants may use non-restricted metalwork areas and tools that do not require a separate induction (i.e. equipment not marked as Induction Required or Red-Tagged), provided they follow all general workshop safety rules and any local signage. No prior lathe experience is required. Membership options and next steps toward independent access can be discussed during or after the session. The course fee includes one month of temporary Makerspace membership.
