After a 24 year teaching career, specialising in carpentry, woodworking and woodturning, I qualified as a DATA accredited trainer, delivering subject and machine training to teaching staff in schools and colleges all over the UK. Due to my passion for woodworking in general, which is my hobby as well as my occupation, I have now decided to start offering courses at my fully equipped workshop in Stockport, for people who share the same passion.

"I recently Mick’s two-day woodturning course for beginners, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The facilities and equipment were top-notch, providing everything needed for a smooth and enjoyable learning process. Mick was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, freely sharing tips, techniques, and insights that only come from years of experience. The course was structured around four well-thought-out projects, each building on the techniques learned in the previous one. This progressive approach made it easy to develop skills step by step while creating something tangible and rewarding at every stage. My main reason for attending was to explore woodturning and decide if it was something I wanted to pursue further. The course not only gave me that experience but also provided valuable guidance on the absolute essentials to consider when purchasing equipment for my own workshop—something that will save me time and money in the future. Overall, it was a brilliant two days that flew by far too quickly. I left feeling inspired, confident, and excited about the possibilities of woodturning. "This 2 day course was excellent. A great introduction to woodturning on the lathe, with only 2 people on the course with a lathe each, you basically had 1-to-1 tuition, with demos by Mick on a third lathe. Step by step demonstrations, then copy on your own piece, complete that stage, then demo of the next stage. 2 pieces completed each day, including sanding and finishing with sealers and wax polishes. Superbly equipped workshop, I attended in December 2025 so was sligtly concerned that it would be cold, but the woodburning stove kept the workshop toasty and warm so I had to shed a few layers. Mick kept the tools sharp throughout each day. Safety was emphasised but you were also given confidence and encouragement to express your own designs. Mick went the extra mile at the end of the second day, helping me complete a small repair job that I had brought along with me on the off-chance!"

"My wife booked me onto this Beginners Course, and having never ‘turned a lathe in my life’ I was amazed to find myself hands-on within half an hour, crafting a honey dipper. By the end of day two, I proudly went home with a bowl, pen, and tea light holder—much to the astonishment of my family! The equipment was excellent (I had no idea so many tools were involved), and the workshop was spacious and well set up. But what truly made the experience invaluable was Mick’s ability to share his incredible knowledge with patience and encouragement. For a complete novice like me, that support made all the difference. I would wholeheartedly recommend this course. "
