So you want to be a beekeeper! Beginners two-day course
Description
INTRODUCTION: We draw on over 30 years experience as beekeepers and a combined teaching experience of over 50 years to plan and deliver effective training courses. This is why we were awarded Best Beekeeping Training Provider 2023 and accredited by Visit Wales. Beekeeping is an activity that is not successfully learnt from books, webinars and the internet alone. There is a lot to learn to make a successful start to what may become a rewarding, lifelong-learning activity. We firmly believe that sufficient knowledge and skills cannot be gained on a one-day beginner's course or a course where many students are crowded around the same hive. The track-record of our past students prove that on completing our intensive two-day beginner course, they are ready to acquire and successfully manage their own bees. A successful start to what may become a fulfilling, lifelong interest depends on acquiring skills and knowledge through practical and hands-on experiences on a course like this one. Two full days are required to deliver the basic training. Training sessions are held between April and the end of August and each day consists of a mix of practical and theoretical tasks. In addition to our dedicated training apiary, we also have hives under cover so that our training courses go ahead regardless of the weather. We expect that you will be able to inspect a hive yourself (under supervision, of course!) by the end of your second day. We advise that you do not acquire your bees before attending your course. However we can advise you on where to source and secure your bees in advance. Similarly, we can advise on the purchase of bee suits and equipment. Some of our beehives are under cover so that our courses are largely independent of the weather between April and August. This is a two-day course, held on two consecutive days. The dates advertised are those for the first of two consecutive days. COURSE CONTENT: Many beekeepers seem to accept swarming as an inevitable event. Sadly, it results in a significant loss of bees and impacts honey yield and may result in complete colony loss. Furthermore, the need to remove swarms from buildings may cause distress, inconvenience, structural work and cost. On our courses, we stress the importance of swarm control and share with you our effective management practices that virtually eliminate the occurrence of swarming. Through presentations and practical activities you will be mentored through the following topics, which are essential for the success and enjoyment of your first year of beekeeping: - Life-cycle and anatomy of honey bees. - How a national hive is organised. - Equipment and protective clothing. - Establishing an apiary. - Installing your new colony of bees. - Inspecting a hive. - Managing your colony in its first year. - Seasonal tasks, including swarm prevention, winter preparation and pest and disease management. - Statutory requirements. For those that have completed our course, we offer an invitation to join a private Whatsapp group for ongoing support and an optional complimentary visit to your apiary or potential site for your hive(s) for those living no more than an hour's travel away from us. Maximum of 4 people attending.
